Brain Functioning, Sleep, and Service

Have those of you who like to serve God ever thought about brain functioning as an important issue in your service?

Brain health is becoming a topic discussed more and more these days. The general research on sleep relative to brain health suggests that most adults need eight (8) hours of sleep a night, teenagers nine (9), and children ten (10) hours. Hogwash you say.... We all know people who survive on five or six hours a night and seem to do just fine!

Well, Friar Tuck!!!! Let me tell you about your five hours.....

What is Important -- Really!?!

We spend too much time in this life on temporal things or "stuff" we want to have. There are really only three things of any importance and the only things we can take with us when we leave this life.

1. Developing love and friendship and relationship with those around us.
2. Learning as much as we can whether it is temporal or spiritual.
3. Developing our faith in and coming to know the Savior Jesus Christ. Learning and following His commandments so that we can have the greatest possible happiness in this life and in the next.

Where are you in these three?

Doctrine vs Policy -- What is the Difference?

It strikes me that in any organization there are two facets which we must keep very clear as being very different and distinct.

Doctrine is what the organization believes. The basic beliefs that drive the organization which almost never change. To an organization doctrine defines: Who we are and what we are; What we believe; These basic principles which the organization will follow. Most notably, a doctrine can be seen in religious organizations, but doctrine exists in all organizations. In business and service organizations it is not called doctrine, usually. It is called an organizational behavior or simply, "the way we do business," but nonetheless it is the doctrine by which an organization functions; the basic underlying belief system upon which the organization predicts the daily operation.

On the other hand, policy is the way an organization is functioning at the present; the day-to-day practices dictate operations. Policy changes. It may not change rapidly, but it does change.

A basic difference...

Doing One's Best -- Are You Able?

What does it mean to do one’s best? I am going to suggest a definition and live with it while I write. You and I could discuss and debate until the cows come home what it means. Does it mean to be perfect? It would be easy to assume that a person’s “best” is perfection since anything less than perfection is not what would be considered the best. Am I right? Of course I am right! But since no one is perfect (sorry, maybe you are, but the rest of us are not), let us try a different definition for “best.”

I suggest that doing one’s best simply means that a person makes the effort to complete a task(s) considering the time available, the education/skill level acquired, the opportunity/circumstance surrounding the task, and the setting in which the task is performed. You are correct: That is not such a simple definition, but at least it leaves out the idea of perfection. One more thought. I will use athletic competition to make my point, but know that the principles apply to any effort (work, school, church, family, etc) to do the best.

Before we go on, there is another issue...

Why Do Men Love Women?

I know...you think this question is a "no-brainer!" Well...think again while I wander your thoughts a little.

First, I must confess that I not really certain many men really understand the concept of love. It seems to be a malady among many men. However, I am going to assume, for the purposes of this writing, that a man understands what it means to love a women. I am going to assume also that a man does it with some semblance of sensibility. I am, by the way, quite certain that women understand what it means to love a man, at least much better than us men understand.

I saw a book one time which was titled: Everything Men Know About Women. It had a red cover and it was small to be sure; No more than fifty pages and probably about five by seven inches in size. I was in a hurry; thought that was quite an interesting title for a book; so I bought the book. I figured that when I arrived home and read the book, I would know everything men know about women. When I had time later that evening, I opened the book and found that every single page in the book was blank. There was not one word in the book. I had to laugh. Then I realized there was some truth in this little book.

I think us men...

Most People Are Stupid -- What Do You Think?

I think a good many people are just plain stupid. I do not think I am better than other people. I do not think God loves me more than other people. I don't think God loves anyone more than anyone else. I think we are all equal in the basic sense of it all. I do not know how to quantify this very well so I just be blunt and move on. I think most people are stupid. It is not that they are retarded or biologically or genetically less, it is just that they behave less.

They do not think; they do not try to think. They live their life about six inches...
