Why Do People Own Dangerous Dogs?

Here is insanity...or maybe stupidity. The press is full of stories of dog bite deaths: A seven year old boy in Texas, a five year old girl in London. Numerous other cases can be cited. Children are the most likely targets of these dog assaults. Dog Bite.org tracks child attacks.

Between July 2006 and May 2008, 49 deaths due to dog mauling were recorded in the US. 33 of these by a Pit Bull or Rottweiler, and several deaths did not report the dog type. Of the cases known, 67% were committed by a Pit Bull or Rottweiler. In an earlier study, Pit bull and Rottweiler dogs accounted for over half of the 238 fatal human attacks in the United States between 1979 and 1998 according to a study by Sacks, Sinclair, Gilchrist, Golab and Lockwood reported in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 2000.

And these dogs do not seem to need provocation, at least not provocation that can be seen: A two year old toddler was mauled while the dog's 25 year old owner gave the child a bath.

So, back to my original question: Why do people own/keep these dogs? I figure there are three possible reasons:
1. The dogs are used for illegal dog fighting.
2. The dogs accompany an owner who is a criminal (drug dealer, etc) for protection.
3. The owner has a pathetically weak ego and the possession of such a dog makes the owner feel 'tough,' 'powerful,' 'cool,' and/or some sort of 'bad ass.'

Election 2008

On the way to church this morning I saw this spray painted on the tailgate of an old pickup truck: "We're screwed '08." Enough said!

Those Swedes Will Try Anything

You gotta love this Reuters story...about a 78 year old drunk Swede who tried to row his way at night from Denmark (where he had been out on the town) back to Sweden.

Scout Camp Report

Scout camp is over. In truth, it went well, very well. This year we leaders had the least amount of "issues" with the young men as I have ever seen. They were good. There were issues, but the issues were small. One of the great things about scout camp is for the true identity of a boy to begin to appear. When you see them for a few hours a couple times a week, the real self often does not show. But for a whole week.....we had:

1. The autocrat (who in weekly life appears a wimp).
2. The organizer (who in weekly life cannot find his belt buckle).
3. The helper (who in weekly life is the irritating tease).
4. The leader (who in weekly life is a devil-may-care type).
5. The clown (who in weekly life is the clown...some people never change).

And so it went. If you have never tried boy scouts. You should do it, or some other youth organization. Volunteer to be a merit badge counselor or something. Boys need quality male examples to befriend and follow. Some boys have no father image in the home or some have derelict fathers. If you think the youth are going to "hell in a handbasket," get in and do your part to stem the tide.

Mr. Barack Obama’s success in the presidential race aside, is it better to "not sound black" in your speech pattern? Interesting research done by Jeffrey Grogger at the University of Chicago finds black people who "sound black" in their speech earn 10% less than black people who do not sound black. Additionally, Grogger found that white people who "sound black" in their speech earn 6% less than their white counterparts. Hummmm....maybe all the "yo mama" accent is fine for hanging with your friends, but avoid it at work.

Tips We Can Learn From A Dog

Never pass up the opportunity for a joy ride

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them

Let others know when they’ve invaded your territory

When it’s in your best interest, practice obedience

Take naps and stretch before rising

Run, romp, and play daily

Eat with gusto and enthusiasm

Be loyal

Never pretend to be something you’re not

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them . . . gently

Thrive on attention and let people touch you

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree

When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body

No matter how often you are scolded, don’t buy into the guilt thing and pout . . . run right back and make friends

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk

Sexual Harassment in Egypt

If you are into perpetrating sexual harassment of women, Egypt appears to be the place to live according to his Reuters News Report. Personally, I could never figure out the benefit to sexual harassment. Perhaps the man believes the stupid chauvinist notion that every woman secretly wants him so all he need do is announce his availability...and he announces in a vulgar manner. More likely, these men are either wimps or vicious. The wimps could not get a woman if they offered a million dollars. The vicious man hates women and has no motive to get one; he just wants to hurt them.
