Scout camp is over. In truth, it went well, very well. This year we leaders had the least amount of "issues" with the young men as I have ever seen. They were good. There were issues, but the issues were small. One of the great things about scout camp is for the true identity of a boy to begin to appear. When you see them for a few hours a couple times a week, the real self often does not show. But for a whole week.....we had:
1. The autocrat (who in weekly life appears a wimp).
2. The organizer (who in weekly life cannot find his belt buckle).
3. The helper (who in weekly life is the irritating tease).
4. The leader (who in weekly life is a devil-may-care type).
5. The clown (who in weekly life is the clown...some people never change).
And so it went. If you have never tried boy scouts. You should do it, or some other youth organization. Volunteer to be a merit badge counselor or something. Boys need quality male examples to befriend and follow. Some boys have no father image in the home or some have derelict fathers. If you think the youth are going to "hell in a handbasket," get in and do your part to stem the tide.
