Today Is Christmas In The Ukraine

I have friends (YES, I have friends!!!) in the Ukraine. Today (January 7) Ukraine celebrates Christmas. Why? Read. It has to do with the the Julian and Gregorian calendars. (The link will tell you more about the calendars than you wanted to know, but the information about Ukraine is very interesting.) Two weeks ago my friends sent me "Merry Christmas" wishes and now they celebrate. January 7 is a hold over from the older calendar, but the date does have benefits. The date is well past the commercialism of December 25th. A more peaceful and religious celebration is possible. AND....the post Christmas sales are in full swing. Gift purchasing is less expensive!

Because of the calendar issue, the best deal is: THEY CELEBRATE TWO NEW YEARS. Gregorian calendar: January 1, and Julian calendar (more or less): January 14. Can you imagine that? Two days full of college football OR two days to be violently hung over from the night before if you are one of those kind OR two sets of new years resolutions OR......pick your pleasure!

Prop 8 Map Of 'YES' Donors

This is the latest in the onslaught against Prop 8. This map shows donor names, addresses, and amount of each contributor to the YES vote on Prop 8 in California. It is public information that anyone could look up, so one wonders why the person or persons putting up the map have hidden themselves in secrecy. If you donated to YES on Prop 8, better watch out for a cross burned into your lawn. Maybe those putting up the map do not want a cross burned on their lawn.

Time For Stories

Do you recall how it was before it is now? I graduated high school in 1962. I remember the so called "good ol' days." At least they were the Good Old Days for my generation. There were good circumstances in those days, but there are also good circumstances in these days. It is time for me to remember the "good ol' days" on this blog. Time to remember the good things that were, even though we lacked the good things that are! My first TV was a round 8" black and white screen. My brothers and I thought we were in Seventh Heaven as we watched the cowboys riding across the screen on slow plow horses in "hot" pursuit of the bad guys. What a thrill! My first bicycle was a Japanese built (shades of vehicles to come?) with mechanically operated hand brakes....way ahead of the times. One afternoon on my way home from school I was saved from the local bully by a girl (no wonder I never had an official date until college). My first kiss.....ooooooohh...sweet Leeann!!!!! That is a moment to savor! I will write these and other stories as time goes along. Come with me on a journey through the "Good Ol' Days."

Story: What Shaped Your Personality?

Probably many experiences in life shape our personality; and there are those in my profession who say that we show up from the womb with tendencies toward behavior shaped from generations of our ancestors. That was a theory originally put forth about the time of Sigmund Freud, which seemed unlikely at the time (unless you were a very religious person), but considering the advancements in DNA, maybe the theory is not so far wrong. At any rate, one of the biggest contributors to my personality and attitudes was my medical problem. I was born with a congenital heart disease: Tetralogy of Fallot, named after some French fellow who was the first to describe the disorder. You can read about it if you want. After four heart surgeries, including open heart surgery and numerous hospitalizations for related issues, I am now in great condition. The lessons I learned, consciously and subconsciously, from this heart problem are almost immeasurable. More on that later. By the way, "open heart surgery" actually refers to opening the chest, not necessarily the heart. But my heart was opened during the last surgery when I was sixteen and a hole between the ventricles in my heart was repaired/closed. [They say that in the average lifetime a person's heart beats about two and a half BILLION times! Be nice to your heart. You do not want it to take a rest.] My dad would say, when he was mad at me for being stupid, that the hole in my heart matched the one in my head!!! Some day I will tell you stories about my father. He was a great guy, but being from the old school he was not always politically polite in his statements. For now you can take the Man Quiz I put together which reflects some of his behavior! HE WAS OLD SCHOOL!!!

"No He Can't " by Ann Wortham, Ph.D. on Barak Obama's Presidency

This article, "No He Can't," by Anne Wortham, Ph.D. gave words to my feelings about our new president. I recently discovered her article dated November 6, 2008. I guess I am blind. It is all over the internet. Please understand: I voted for Mr. Obama. I am not one to write-in names on a ballot (unless it is "Mickey Mouse") and I was not going to vote for the other candidate who I thought looked a lot like George W. Bush. But even in voting for Mr. Obama I felt a discomfort. Dr. Wortham's article speaks to my feelings. Consistent with Dr. Wortham's comments, my vote was not about color or race. I did not want my vote to seem like I was voting for a black man for president...I was voting for the best alternative (such as they were).

I was appalled by the reaction of many in the US and around the world that somehow the election of Mr. Obama, a black man, was seen as new era, or a turning point in America, or the announcement of a fundamental change in American attitude. What difference does it make if the president is black or white or yellow or red or male or female or....??? The issue is the person.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio

Of course you have heard about Sherif Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Phoenix, AZ. He is the tough sheriff who makes his inmates wear pink suits, underwear, and socks. The prisoners live in tents in the Arizona heat, and when they complain he tells them the solders in Iraq live in tents with the same outside temperature and they did not commit any crime. He took over the county pound, has the prisoners work with the animals, and brought the county budget for stray animals to a fraction of what it was. His practices have been criticized by organizations such as Amnesty International, the American Civil Liberties Union [what else is new?], the Arizona Ecumenical Council, the American Jewish Committee, and the Arizona chapter of the Anti-Defamation League. The link above to sheriff Arpaio tells about his attitude and position on dealing with criminals. sherifJoeArpaioR.jpg

What Is It With Politicians?

We go from hard nosed, maybe excessive, but honest Sheriff Joe in Arizona to this week's infusion of elected criminals. Mayor Eddie Perez of Hartford, Connecticut is surrounded by charges of bribery. He surrendered to police, but insisted he did nothing wrong and will not resign his office. Then there is Mayor Larry Langford of Birmingham, Alabama who was arrested by the FBI this past Monday on charges including conspiracy, bribery, fraud, money laundering and filing false income tax returns. [Pillar of the community! Probably want your daughter to marry his son.] According to his lawyer, Mayor Langford is going back to work. Not forgetting Portland, Oregon: Mayor Sam Adams says he will not resign after getting himself elected by lying about a sexual relationship with a teenager (age 18) and getting his paramour to lie with him. Mayor Sam Adams (isn't there a beer by that name?) reportedly only "kissed" the young man at age seventeen and "waited" until he was 18 to involve sex in the relationship. Mayor Adams said he is not guilty of sex with a minor because "kissing is not sex." Hummm....do we recall our former president Bill Clinton saying something like that....oral sex is not sex. Finally, the continuing saga of the Illinois Governor, Mr. Rod Blagojevich found him arrested this week for, among other things, attemtping to sell the senatorial seat vacated by Mr. Obama. Where do all these liars, thieves, and corrupt people come from??? And why are they still in office? None of these men are going to resign. None of them intend to do the honest thing. They all say they will stay in office. Why are our elected official criminals? Well...I have a theory! It is because WE, the electorate, allow them in office. We allow the criminality! Why? Because we are selfish! If the politician will do WHAT WE WANT DONE, we will turn our back on whatever else he or she does, and they know it! "Gimme" "Gimme" "Gimme" is our electorate motto. And it is only going to get worse with the economy as nasty as it is. This country is on path to become a second rate nation, and when we arrive there, we will have no one but our own selfish urges to thank. A Nation That Was Once Generally Great, Has Become Commonly Dirty.

One More Example Of Why This Country Is In Financial Pain

How much of your tax payer money is burned up uselessly by public employees or those feeding at the public trough? Thousands of hours (dollars) at the National Science Foundation were spent watching pornography, rather than working. And if you multiply the dollars by the millions of people who play at work instead of work at work, it is no wonder we are are in a economic recession. Maybe the Russians have it right after all. When I visited there years ago I thought it odd that it seemed like everyone who considered themselves fully employed only worked three, maybe four, days a week. And they complained they were closely watched and received minimal pay. We work five, maybe six, days a week for bigger pay, but maybe the amount of actual work being done is no more than in Russia....it is just they do not pay for play like we do.

How Important Is It To Know Whether Women Beome Sexually Aroused While Watching Pornography?

"If you had $147,000 to spend on scientific research, would you rather try to find a cure for cancer or see whether women get sexually aroused while watching pornography," inquires the lead line in an ABC News Report about research funded by the National Institute of Health. The report goes on to indicate your taxpayer money was used to fund a project researching female sexual arousal to pornography as well as other equally worthless projects such as whether men or women are more likely to sleep with a stranger. (And that will help the scientific community, How?) The defense to such use of money was research "seemingly silly could lead to the next miracle discovery."
