Sheriff Joe Arpaio

Of course you have heard about Sherif Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Phoenix, AZ. He is the tough sheriff who makes his inmates wear pink suits, underwear, and socks. The prisoners live in tents in the Arizona heat, and when they complain he tells them the solders in Iraq live in tents with the same outside temperature and they did not commit any crime. He took over the county pound, has the prisoners work with the animals, and brought the county budget for stray animals to a fraction of what it was. His practices have been criticized by organizations such as Amnesty International, the American Civil Liberties Union [what else is new?], the Arizona Ecumenical Council, the American Jewish Committee, and the Arizona chapter of the Anti-Defamation League. The link above to sheriff Arpaio tells about his attitude and position on dealing with criminals. sherifJoeArpaioR.jpg
