Today Is Christmas In The Ukraine

I have friends (YES, I have friends!!!) in the Ukraine. Today (January 7) Ukraine celebrates Christmas. Why? Read. It has to do with the the Julian and Gregorian calendars. (The link will tell you more about the calendars than you wanted to know, but the information about Ukraine is very interesting.) Two weeks ago my friends sent me "Merry Christmas" wishes and now they celebrate. January 7 is a hold over from the older calendar, but the date does have benefits. The date is well past the commercialism of December 25th. A more peaceful and religious celebration is possible. AND....the post Christmas sales are in full swing. Gift purchasing is less expensive!

Because of the calendar issue, the best deal is: THEY CELEBRATE TWO NEW YEARS. Gregorian calendar: January 1, and Julian calendar (more or less): January 14. Can you imagine that? Two days full of college football OR two days to be violently hung over from the night before if you are one of those kind OR two sets of new years resolutions OR......pick your pleasure!
