door hit you

GW would say: “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.”

Obviously he meant to be careful when exiting a door. But he said it often when there was no door to exit. What?

He meant, when leaving any situation, be certain it is finished or settled before you go. And if not settled, be careful.
