new years day pruning

Although GW was in the US Air Force, he also took care of a 5 acre peach orchard because he was a farm boy at heart. Us older boys had to go prune the peach trees on New Year’s Day. WHAT? Miss out on all the college football? I was ailing when I had to go pruning. Tried to negotiate for a different day. Nothing doing. ‘It needs to be done today.’ There were numerous other times we had to do chores instead of fun goofing off. It was GW’s way.

While I did not get to have my fun (I thought I would have), what I did get was the motivation to work, to do a good job on time. The latter has been a much greater benefit to my life than the fun I missed would have been.
